Department store chain Debenhams has announced it will reopen a further 38 stores in England, following the “successful reopening” of 50 of its stores earlier this week.

The department store has said that the rest of its England shops will be open for business soon.

Store opening times may vary, but operating hours are thought to be from 10am until 5pm, seven days a week.

Debenhams revealed that four stores have also reopened in Northern Ireland, whilst the business awaits confirmation from Wales and Scotland as to when stores located in those nations can reopen.

The department store chain made the “tough decision” to temporarily close its sites in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Debenhams has implemented a raft of measures to keep its colleagues and customers safe, including installing 2,000 perspex screens at tills, providing staff with visors and gloves and implementing queue management processes.

Steven Cook, managing director, Debenhams, said: “We were pleased with the first day of reopening in England [15 June], following the reopening of our Northern Irish stores last week.

“Our customers have been complimentary about the safety precautions we have introduced. It is very early days of course, but we look forward to opening most of our remaining English stores on Wednesday.”

He added: “Longer-term, there will be plenty of issues to be resolved, notably around unsustainable rates bills, if the High Street is going to get back onto a sustainable footing.”

The group said it has entered administration to “protect Debenhams in the UK from the threat of legal action” that could have the effect of pushing the business into liquidation, while its 142 UK stores remain closed in line with the government’s current advice regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most recently, Debenhams confirmed three more of its stores will not reopen once lockdown restrictions are eased.

It revealed that three of its stores located in Intu shopping centres will close permanently after it failed to agree terms with the shopping centre owner.

The stores are located within Intu Metrocentre, Intu Watford and Intu Milton Keynes.
